In Bangkok, "night markets" were actually markets at night; they were places to get souvenirs, good street food, and the craziest thing you see there is people selling laughing gas (I learned that touristy locations are places for illegal activity, because it gets too complicated to arrest and detain foreigners). The Patong "Night Market" was not a "market" as Westerners would call it. Another name for it is the Walking Street, which is more applicable. The main street there's no produce or souvenirs to be found, and it's definitely not a place to take the kids, We went to the Walking Street twice, once with the optional tour I purchased when we bought the trip, and once with the group who decided to go to the Cabernet Show, per the recommendation of the tour guides. Overall, I wouldn't recommend the Optional Tour available to purchase from the company website. We went because it promised a seafood dinner, which had nearly no seafood and had nothing good. Like most meals with a big group, it was at a hotel and was very disappointing.
Most of the Walking Street are themed bars with live bands, and sometimes pole dancers. It's all open air, inviting people on the street to come in for a look. If you're looking for a place to get drunk and party, this is the place for you. This is definitely not the place for people I think I was the last person to find out what the Walking Street actually was. First lesson I learned, a Ping Pong show is not people playing ping pong. What it is, I can only imagine, but it apparently is also synonymous with the phrase "f**king show" because all along the street were people yelling both phrases with signs of sexy women. (I apologize for the bad photos, but the pushy sales people seem to shy away from cameras, so I tried to take them quickly.) From what I heard, it involves women putting ping pong balls and other things in their you-know-what and scamming clients. They promise "free show, just buy one drink" then charge obscene amounts for a drink. They may even ask members of the audience to be part of the show, like holding a balloon, then charging for the balloon.
